The main point of changing security settings is to add a new phone number. Despite the fact that the old phone is deleted from the account when you try to change the security settings, Google sends SMS to a remote number that cannot be accessed. It's also worth keeping in mind that the new number will be tied to the account no sooner than 7 days later. Once the number has been added, you can proceed to further customize your security settings. You can also set the priority of verification, for example, if you are using a leased phone number that you plan to delete.

Gmail account requests SMS from a previous phone number

Sometimes when you try to make changes to your account, Gmail may ask you to accept a code from a text message sent to a phone number that was previously connected to your account. To be able to accept text messages, you will need to add your phone number to your profile. Once the system updates (approximately 7 days), SMS will begin to arrive to the added number.

Gmail asks you to add a phone number

Accounts are phone verified, but the phone number may be deleted before delivery. You should add your own phone number as soon as possible after logging in. If you do not have a phone number to add, we recommend using number rental or SMS activation services.
